CALL for Change: an exploratory case study from the Saudi context

العنوان: CALL for Change: an exploratory case study from the Saudi context

المؤلفون: Hind M. Alotaibi

ملخص: This paper reports an exploratory case study of 48 Saudi female freshmen at the College of Languages & Translation in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The study seeks to examine the effect of using computers in EFL reading classrooms by looking at how the use of computers contributes to the development of students’ reading skills and strategies. It explores the effects of using computer-based reading lessons in EFL classrooms on learners' attitudes, behaviors and motivation. It also investigates the effect of using such lessons on the teacher's role and her understanding of that role. Findings showed statistically significant improvement in students’ examination scores. The qualitative analysis of the data reveals that integrating computer-based lessons in this particular reading class gradually developed positive attitudinal and behavioral change during the course and increased motivation. It also led to a desire for an increase in autonomous, interactive behavior not only in the reading class but in other classes as well. Findings showed a positive change in the teacher’s behavior and attitude. That change lead to a gradual shift in her role from the manager of the class into more of a facilitator, allowing her students more control over their learning.

العنوان: The First Sentences of the French Author Mobasan's Stories.

المؤلفون: Dr. Hanan Mahmoud Zraik Farhat

ملخص: This study reviews the importance of the first sentences in the first and second parts of (stories and novels) for the French author Mobasan. Why did we choose these parts? Because we could collect the first sentences in 31 stories divided into two parts, the first part includes 17 stories and the second one includes 14 stories. There are various topics in the two parts as Mobasan reviews scenes of everyday life, for example: the concept of death, lying, greed, tragedy and so on. Mobsan depends on the descriptive style in reviewing these scenes, and usually the first sentences of Mobasan's stories have great effect on the characters and morals of his stories.

العنوان: Students' Achievement in French Grammar

المؤلفون: Dr. Huda Jameel Baranji

ملخص: This study aims at recognizing strength and weakness points as well as the difficulties that translation students (College of languages and translation(COLT) - French department) face regarding French grammar. It also aims at recognizing students' achievement in French grammar taught in COLT because there a lot of grammatical problems that the students face in translation and also the students' abilities after 5 years in studying French translation are below the required level. This study is limited to French grammar only without mentioning the other skills because grammar has a major role in making the translator especially in the initial steps of learning the language. Students' achievement was measured by designing an objective statistical test that includes the basic French grammar as it is the real standard in deciding whether achieving the desired goals of the curriculum was successful or not. The results have shown that the achievement percentage was generally below average which shows the students' weakness and a real problem that should be solved.
