      <title>Interface problems between building owners and designers</title>

      <description>Title: Interface problems between building owners and designers&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Authors: Al-Hammad, A.-M.a ,; Al-Hammad, I.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Abstract: The objectives of this paper are to identify and assess the relationship between building owners and designers in terms of their interface problems. The methodology utilized in this research consists of two phases. In the first phase, a literature review was conducted, and interviews with various building owners and designers took place in order to identify the interface problems between them. This resulted in the identification of 20 interfaced problems, which were classified into three categories, namely: inadequate contract and specifications, financial problems, and lack of proper communication. In the second phase, a survey of a randomly selected sample of 30 building owners and 30 designers from Saudi Arabia was undertaken to evaluate the severity of the 20 identified interface problems. The relative severity of the problems were determined and then ranked according to a severity index for both owners and designers. The owners evaluated four problems as "most severe," 14 problems as "severe," and two problems as "somewhat severe." The designers evaluated three problems as "most severe," 15 problems as "severe," and two problems as "somewhat severe." It was also found that owners and designers generally agreed on the severity of their interface problems.</description>

      <title>Costing differentials of contracting in Saudi Arabia</title>

      <description>Title: Costing differentials of contracting in Saudi Arabia&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Authors: Al-Hammad, I.A.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Abstract: A system for classifying and ranking the construction and maintenance contractors in 5 categories for each construction sub-sector is set up in Saudi Arabia, as part of regulating the construction industry. Short of public and private agencies efforts, is to establish a cost index in the construction industry in Saudi Arabia at the micro level. This led to have various contractors establishing their own undisclosed cost databases. Due to the scarcity of transparency in the construction industry combined with insufficient information of cost database; this paper approaches this problem for two purposes. The first is to expose construction unit costs distribution among contractor categories; and the second goal, is to examine the correlation of the contractor ranks versus their respective average unit costs.</description>

      <description>Title: A comparative evaluation of construction and manufacturing materials management&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Authors: Ibn-Homaid, N.T.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Abstract: Construction materials managements especially in major projects is an importand and complex function in need of substantial improvements. In manufacturing, unlike in construction, the function is extensively studied, highly developed formal systems and techniques for performing it exist. The potential value of the work that has gone into that formalization, as well as the techniques produced, for resolving the need for improving materials management in construction seems evident from similarities of the function in the two industries. Although there is some awareness of it, this potential is largely unexplored. This paper reports on a study carried out to explore this potential through a comparative evaluation of construction and manufacturing materials management processes. The research reveals that materials management of manufacturing can assist in formalizing that of construction and some of the developed detailed techniques can be adapted or readily applied. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd and IPMA.       <description>Title: Quality assurance charts for precise determination of the deformation of cylindrical tanks using ground surveying&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Authors: Aguib, A.S.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Abstract: Point position determination on a cylindrical tank wall is subject to some uncertainty due to a number of factors, including the geometry of the observations (horizontal and vertical angles, distance from the tank), instrument precision and geometry of the structure. A formula is developed to represent the effect of these parameters on the uncertainty of the position of the observed point. It has been converted to a group of charts that can be used to determine these parameters that assure the precision required in determining the point position.</description>
