Title: Some Quality Aspects of the Use of Sewage Effluents in Agriculture.

Abstract: The chemical quality of sewage effluents of Riyadh area was made on the basis of EC, cations concentration, S.A.R., concentration of boron, heavy metals and other potentially toxic elements. It was found that the average conductivity of final effluent is 2.3 mmhos/cm i.e. little above than the commonly accepted limit or 2.25 mmhos/cm for good irrigation water to be used for a considerable length of time. SAR values do not indicate any potential alkali hazard of these effluents as irrigation water. Concentration of boron is slightly above than the maximum level of boron in irrigation water for continuous use on all soils but it is not higher than the maximum permissible limits for sensitive plants. Nitrate, P and pH are acceptable. Most of heavy metals in the final effluent are associated with suspended solids, upon digestion, they come into solution. However their concentration are quite lower than the maximum permissible limits in irrigation water and typical effluent according to US Environmental protection Agency. Moreover, it was also found that use of Riyadh sewage effluents in irrigation recreation area for about 3 years increased the contents of P and micronutrients Cu, Mn and Zn in plant and soil as compared to samples irrigated with tap water.
