Title: Breeding for Salt Tolerance in Cereals. 1. Screening Techniques

Abstract: In our effort to develop a salt tolerance breeding program for cereals, germination capacity and seedlings establishment in relation to salt concentrations were studied in petri dishes and sandy soil culture. Effects of seed size and depth of planting were also investigated in wheat and barley. Results from petri dishes culture on seedlings establishment were unreliable suggesting the use of simulated field conditions. Salt concentration interacted with soil planting depth but was independent of seed size. Based on the above information, a multi-test salt-tolerance screening technique was designed. The first test covered the germination seedling stage. Out of 5072 wheat genotypes tested in the first step, only 717 genotypes were selected for tolerating a salt concentration of 16,000 ppm TDS. The second test dealt with survival. Testing a sample of 286 genotypes taken from the selected 717 ones, indicated that approximately 30% of the genotypes would be of possible value. In other words the proposed technique has resulted in the selection of the 5% promising cultivars to be used in the breeding program
