Title: Effects of Soil Salinity and Water Stresses on Mineral Composition of Wheat and Triticale

Abstract: The combined effect of soil salinity and water stresses on Ca, K, Mg, and Na, accumulation in the vegetative yield, at flowering stage, of three wheat cultivars and one triticale line was studied in a pot experiment conducted in a greenhouse. Salinities were S1 = 3.5, S2 = 6, S3 = 8.5 and S4 = 11 mmohs/cm (20oC). Soil-paste extract that were created by using solution consisting of 3:2:1 of Na, Ca, and Mg chlorides in chemical equivalent amounts. Water treatments included, W1 =100%, W2 = 40%, and W3 = 20% of the available soil moisture (10.2% by weight). The soil was highly calcareous (37.3% CaCO3) and sandy loam. Multiple quadratic regression of the composition on W and S was performed. No significant differences in Ca were observed due to the applied stresses nor among the studied lines. K decreased in response to increasing S and W and was not affected by SxW. Triticale significantly maintained higher K than wheat and this may explain its relative higher tolerance to the applied stresses. Mg did not respond to W but increased to 135% of that at S1W1 when S increased to S4. However, effect of SxW on Mg was highly significant. Na was affected only by S treatments and reached 475% of S1 W1 at S4 Nutritional disturbances of stressed lines appeared in excessive accumulation of Na and Mg and reduced absorption of K, especially in wheat, whereas Ca was not affected.
