Title: Crop Response to Large Initial P Application on Highly Calcareous Soil

Abstract: In field experiments three crops (two wheat and one proso millet) were grown in succession on a highly calcareous soil receiving two moisture regimes. Phosphate was given in such a way that either a high initial application was provided to the first crop with or without smaller additions to the others, or that the latter was given to each of the crops in absence of the former. The effect of the P treatments on dry matter, grain yield and on NPK content and uptake of the crop plants was examined relative to a control receiving no P. The crops generally responded well to P irrespective of the manner in which it was applied. The residual effect of the large initial application was comparable to that of the repeated small additions. The crops did not respond to P when the soil test value exceeded 20 ppm bicarbonate-extractable P. The favourable crop response to P on the present highly calcareous soil indicated a need for defining these soils probably more in terms of CaCO3 activity than content.
