Abstract: The toxic effects of diet containing ten percent Citrullus colocynthis L. Schrad. fruits, ten percent Rhazya stricta Decne leaves or their 1:1 mixture (5% + 5%) on rats treated for six weeks were investigated. The salient features of Citrullus colocynthis toxicity were decreases in body weight and feed efficiency, diarrhea, and enterohepatonephro-toxicity. Rhazya toxicosis was characterized by decreased growth rate, soft feces, biliary hyperplasia, and renal tubular cell necrosis. Anemia was normocytic normochromic in rats on ten percent Citrullus colocynthis and macrocytic in rats on food with ten percent Rhazya stricta and both plants were accompanied by leukopenia. Lesions were correlated with alterations in serum LDH, AST, and ALT activities and concentrations of urea, total protein, albumin and other serum constituents. Bilirubinemia was only detected in rats fed Rhayza stricta. Neither changes in growth nor significant organ lesions were observed in rats fed the mixture of the two plants.
