Title: Winter feeding of Oreochromis niloticus L. with local feeds in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract: The effects feeding with local feed ingredients and natural food organisms (mainly plankton) at low temperature (15-8 °C) on the growth and survival of the freshwater fish Oreochromis niloticus (L.) were tested in outdoor 1.0 m3 fiber-glass tanks. Fish water found to consume both types of food at 15 °C, a comparatively greater amount of plankton at 12 °C, mainly plankton at 10 °C, and no food at 8 °C. Moreover, feeding below 15 °C was found to markedly deteriorate the water, significantly lower the pH (below 6.5) and oxygen contents (below 6.0 mg/I) and reduce the growth rate and survival of the fish. For future use of this fish in aquaculture, procedures for over wintering should be developed.
