Title: Effect of feeding different protein and energy levels on the growth performance of Barbus apoensis (Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae).

Abstract: Barbus apoensis fry with an average body weight of 0.880.04 and length of 5.00.03 cm were collected from the Gizan Dam in southwestern Saudi Arabia. These were randomly divided into nine groups containing 30 fry in each with two replicates and were kept in glass aquaria containing well-aerated tap water maintained at 28°1°C. Nine experimental diets containing 20, 30 and 40 % protein at three energy levels (489.5, 541.4 and 601.4 Kcal gross energy/100 g) were prepared and fed at random to each group for a period of days. Significant (p<0.05) differents were observed in the average daily weight gain of fish fed different diets. Varying the protein and energy level in the diets also affected their intake significantly. The maximum diet intake was observed for diet containing 30 % crude protein at medium energy level. The diet containing 30 % crude protein at medium energy level showed the best results followed by the diet containing the same amount of protein at low energy level as compared to all other diets. Increasing the level of energy in low protein (20 %) diets did not significantly affect the growth performance of B. apoensis. Similar results were observed in groups fed diets containing 40 % crude protein at both medium and high energy levels. It may be concluded that a diet containing 30 % crude protein at medium energy level will meet the requirement of B. apoensis.
