| Abstract: | Twonewmarinescuticociliates,Pleuronemasinican.sp.andP.wilbertin.sp.,collectedfromthesandbeachofQingdao,China,wereinvestigatedinvivoandfollowingprotargolimpregnation.Ciliatesofthegenus Pleuronema are normallyrecognizablebytheirlargesail-likeparoralmembranealthoughonespecies, P. grolierei, hasshorterciliain the paroralmembrane.Neitherofthenewformshastheconspicuousparoralmembraneinvivosointhisrespectthey are nottypicalmembersofthisgenus. Pleuronemasinica is characterizedbyitslarge,conspicuouslyflattenedbody,the possessionofonlyonepreoralkinety,theirregular-shapedmacronucleusandtheratherunusualstructureoftheoral apparatus.Bycontrast P. wilberti has amedium-sizebroad-ovalbody,sixtoeightpreoralkinetiesandahighly differentiatedmembranelle3thatisfive-orsix-rowed.Anidentificationkeyissuppliedforthe15speciesof Pleuronema for whichtheinfraciliatureisknown. |
