Abstract: The livingmorphology,infraciliatureandsilverlinesystemoftwosmallmarine Euplotes species, E.orientalis spec. nov. and E. raikovi Agamaliev,1966, isolatedfromasandybeachnearQingdao,China,wereinvestigated. Euplotes orientalis is characterizedbyacombinationoffeaturesincludingtheirsmallsize(35-45 mm long),fiveorsix conspicuousdorsalridges,twocilia-freebasalplaques,eightnormal-sizedfrontoventralcirri(FVC),andadouble- patella-I typeofsilverlinesystem. Euplotesraikovi is redescribedbasedonaChinesepopulationandincludesthefirst detaileddescriptionofitsmorphology in vivo. Itcanberecognizedbyhavingonehighlyreducedandsevennormal- sized frontoventralcirri,asinglemarginalcirrus,andadouble-patella-I typeofsilverlinesystem.Forbothspeciesthe small subunitrRNA(SSUrRNA)genesequencewasdetermined.Phylogeneticanalysesbasedonthesedataindicate that E. orientalis is mostcloselyrelatedto E. plicatum and E. bisulcatus, whereas E. raikovi clusterswithitsconspecific strains, closeto E. nobilii and E. elegans. & 2009ElsevierGmbH.Allrightsreserved.
