| Abstract: | One SAR image from Almaz-1 Russian Satellite covering the City of Riyadh and surroundings was evaluated for the purpose of assessing its suitability for small-scale planimetric mapping. A number of mathematical transformation algorithms were used for the purpose. For the control points, the best results were obtained with higher order polynomial solutions. However, the simple affine transformation gave results approximating those obtained with the higher order polynomial solutions (σp = ±63 m). These show that in purely geometric sense, Almaz-1 SAR imagery is compatible with planimetric mapping at 1/250 000 scale and smaller. Combining the results of the geometric and interpretational tests, it seems that Almax SAR data will be suitable only for planimetric mapping at 1/350 000 scale and smaller. -from Authors |
