Abstract: We investigated the characteristics of electrochemical cells for water splitting by measuring their static I-V characteristics. The effect of the electrode material, the temperature and the electrolyte concentration on the I-V characteristics of the cell has been determined. In order to determine the contribution of the metallic cathode and anode separately, we measured the static I-V characteristics of the half cells made of different metals. The small signal impedance of the half cells was also measured to obtain information about the nature of the interface layer of the (M-E) junctions. The dependence of small signal capacitance and conductance on voltage and frequency was measured and evaluated. Finally, the conditions for an optimum electrochemical electrolyzer cell could be devised.
