Abstract: Purpose: This study has been conducted to investigate the effect of Inspiratory muscle training on functional capacity indices among patients with chronic heart failure. Subjects: Twenty male patients with chronic heart failure (~l year) associated with respiratory muscle weakness; 70% of their predicted maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) had participated in this study. They were recruited for the study from the out patient clinic of national heali institute. Materials: cardiopulmonary exercise test unit was used to measure the maximum oxygen consumption (V02 max), peak workload and the anaerobic threshold (AT) as indices for functional capacity. Spirometry system with shutter was lIsed to measure the maximum inspiratory pressure for all the subjects. Resistive loading inspiratory muscle trainer was used to train the inspiratory muscles for all the subjects. Procedures: All the subjects had participated in two 1110nths program of inspiratory muscle training using resistive loading inspiratory muscle trainer. Results: The statistical analysis of the data had showed two months program of inspiratory muscle training using resistive loading inspiratory muscle trainer has significantly improved the functional capacity indices and the inspiratory muscle strength among patients with chronic heart failure. Conclusion: Inspiratory muscle trainer could be recommended as save and effective methods of training for those patients.
