Abstract: A controlled, randomized, double, blind trial was carried out in 60 patients ~(30 ~1., 30 F; age 24-33 yr.) with acute phase ,?f periodontal disease. to compare :the, . efhcacy of. oxytetracycline (250 mg QID, x 7 d, N = 30) against placebo (1 cap QID x 7 d.. N = 30). None of the patients had received any antibiotic during the previous one month. The diagnoses included periodontal abscess, pericoronitis, chronic gingivitis, and acute exacerbation of chronic periodontitis. Response was assessed from the gingival . inflammatory index and the depth of periodontal pockets. By both these, parameters, oxytetracychne was significantly more effective than placebo (P < 0.01), thus confirming its utility in the treatment of periodontal disease.
