Abstract: Professional interest in the etiology and treatment of cervical dentinal hypersensitivity has been evident in the literature for the past 150 years.1 Studies have established that root hypersensitivity is due in part to open dentinal tubules at the root surface.2*5 The hydrodynamic theory of Brannstrom is the proposed mechanism for this sensitivity. A rapid movement of fluid in the dentinal tubules is capable of activating intradental sensory nerves responsible for the patient discomfort.6 The concept of tubuii occlusion as a method of dentine desen-sitlzation is a logical conclusion from the hydro-dynamic hypothesis. Basically, two approaches for the treatment of dentinal tubules and alteration of pulpal sensory activity at or near the pulpo-dentina! surface.
