Abstract: Four female patients were seen at the College of Dentistry, all with unusual localized gingival pigmentation. The histories revealed intentional gingival tattooing for cosmetic or therapeutic reasons. INTRODUCTION Variation* in gingival color can be the result of a variety of causes ranging from gingivitis to racial pigmentation. Non racial causes of the variations can be local or sys-tcmic, and can vary from such systemic diseases as Addison's disease and Albright's syndrome leading to generalized discoloration or to lead or bismuth poisoning which usually gives a more localized change.
