Abstract: The liver is one of the most important vital organs in the human body dealing with metabolism and detoxification of external and internal chemical substances. Many toxins target the liver and cause hepatotoxic effects that can be observed through some biochemical parameters. Many herbs have been proven to be effective as hepatoprotective agents while many more are claimed to be hepatoprotective and used in folk medicine but no scientific evidence to support such claims is available yet. The goals of this thesis were: 1. Screening of some plants that are used in traditional Saudi medicine for their claimed hepatoprotective properties. 2. Selection of some of the active plants to isolate, identify and test their pure compounds for hepatoprotective activity. 3. Histopathological study of the active extracts, fractions and pure isolates to assess protection of liver cells. 4. Evaluation of safety and characterization of the toxic effects of some active extracts via acute and sub-chronic toxicity tests. The thesis is composed of an introduction (37 pages) and three parts. Different results are presented in 61 tables and illustrated by 34 figures. At the end of the thesis a list of 146 references used in the different parts is given.
