Abstract: The problem of wide open channels subject to seepage losses into a permeable layer of finite thickness underlain by a highly permeable layer is investigated in this paper. An experimental channel model is designed and constructed to simulate practical conditions and water surface profiles, corresponding to various discharges, channels slopes and bottom slit widths, are traced and presented in the form of non-dimensional graphs. Analysis of the experimental data indicates that in all cases straight line profiles are the simplest with practically acceptable differences from the actual profiles.
