Title: Plant Extracts as an Alternative Tool for Pests Control

Abstract: Extracts of several plants, Juniperus polycarpos, Lantana camara and Capparus cartilaginea were tested for their phytotoxic properties, on cucumber and wheat seedlings; Fungicidal activity on Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium oxysporum, bactericidal activity on Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas spp and Erwinia carotovora. Methanolic extract of J. polycarpos was the most effective one against Pseudomonas spp. and Bacillus subtilis, since its minimum inhibition concentrations ( mic ) were 10 and 20 ppm, respectively. Also, it was moderately toxic against R. solani and F. oxysporum ( ED50 values = 300 and 297 ppm, respectively ), whereas, methanolic extract from L. camara was the most effective against R. solani and F. oxysporum ( ED50 values = 130 and 120 ppm respectively ) , and was moderately bacteritoxic and phytotoxic. However, extracts of J. polycarpos and C. cartilaginea had no effect against cucumber and wheat plants. The results suggest that allelochemical (s) from J. polycarpos and L. camara may have potential to develop natural products that may act as bactericides and fungicides, thus, further studies are recommended.
